FED: Australian doctor appointed to World Bank

CANBERRA, Feb 1 AAP - An Australian doctor has been appointed as a health consultant to the
World Bank.

Dr Harvey Whiteford, the former director of mental health with the federal Health and Aged
Care Department, took up his 12-month appointment in Washington today.

Federal Health Minister Michael Wooldridge said the appointment was significant recognition
of Dr Whiteford's achievements and the leadership which he and Australia had shown in national
approaches to mental health.

"Dr Whiteford has played an integral role in the development and implementation of
Australia's National Mental Health Strategy," Dr Wooldridge said in a statement.

"His expertise in this vital health area will be invaluable to the World Bank's efforts to
develop an international mental health strategy."

Professor Scott Henderson of the Australian National University will replace Dr Whiteford
as a part-time clinical adviser.
